Excerpts
:
( ) In the midst of stifling a yawn and
pulling my dog from his favourite hiding place my phone rings. It’s my
mother-in-law and she has a complaint – ‘Beta, he came up to the house
yesterday, he has become so thin, why are you not feeding him properly ?’ I am
a bit confused because I have been feeding the dog the same thing for years and
he seems to look pretty much the same to me. Ahhh … I get it. She is talking
about the man of the house. I want to tell her that the man of the house has
deliberately lost 8 kilos for his next role as a wiry boxer, but it’s just wise
to let her send the makki di roti and saag, especially since it’s my all time
favourite dish as well.
( ) Every summer we pack up our house
and throw everything we can find in massive suitcases and head off on our
annual vacation.
This year we
have 3 extra bags that carry all the essentials requirements of a very tiny
person. ‘The Baby’. How can a 11 kilo baby need 85 kilo of things is a
calculation that would involve equations of relativity that I can’t solve. All
I can do is make lists and go on packing.
I desperately
call my mother, asking for her help. She arrives in half an hour and instead of
assisting me with the mundane task of organizing diapers and matching
hair-bands, decides that all the paintings in my house have to be rearranged at
this very moment. I am standing helplessly in the midst of 6 suitcases and she has badgered my staff to
drop everything they were doing, including last minute washing and ironing, and
they are now all busy drilling holes in my walls.
My
Take
: The writer is well known and is a
frequent writer of such humorous articles in national dailies. Some books are
also of the same genre. Interesting and
humorous reading.

Oh! I remember reading this book too, before my marriage and found it quite hilarious! Sometimes though, the book becomes to much of a privileged household and its problems, esp... like - the excerpt you have mentioned that 'the mother decided to rearrange the paintings in the house'!
ReplyDeleteBut, still it's a good read.
